The power of good spelling and grammar cannot be underestimated in online dating, and I have the stats to prove it. I’m not going to teach you good grammar because it is probably too late. What I will do is explain why it’s important and then show you where to find two online tools that will improve your grammar game!
There were four components to a good online dating profile —
- handle
- greeting
- pictures
- write-up
You will notice that three of them involve writing words. The handle and greeting are less work, but it remains important to get them right because those are the first two things she’s going to see. Where you make or break your profile is in the write-up. I want to take this time to show you why it will make or break you.
I use a text editor called ProWritingAid, and late this spring, they conducted a study on how grammar was viewed by men and women across six dating apps in both the UK and USA. They had an equal number of men’s and women’s profiles and good and bad grammar versions of each.
In all, they surveyed over 12,000 people.
I’m not going to focus on what men thought of women’s grammar. Instead, I’ll focus on what women thought because you will be writing your profile for women. The study’s biggest finding was —
“Good grammar will massively boost men’s chances.”
Here are the most important numbers from the study —
- Women 18–34–58% said they valued good grammar, and they were 311% more likely to connect with someone with good grammar.
- Women 35+ — 65% said they valued good grammar, and they were 39% more likely to pick a profile with good grammar.
- A full 63% of women considered grammar in a dating profile as important.
- Women in the US were more likely to value good grammar than women in the UK.
It is nice to have some numbers to back me up, but this is something I’ve preached since I started writing about online dating. Women prefer men who can write properly. I think the reason is good grammar and fewer mistakes show that men are intelligent, diligent, and concerned about how they appear to others when they communicate.
Grammar and spelling are, therefore, screening tools women use.

What I recommend you do is create an account with either one of those websites to use their free editor. Then, draft your profile write-up, plunk it into the editor, look at what it tells you to fix, and make sure you’re good.
When I edit and revise client profiles, I run them through Grammarly Pro, the paid version of Grammarly, to make sure I haven’t made any mistakes before sending them out. I also often check any subsequent edits clients do to make sure they’ve not made a mistake.
And I will say this until I’m blue in the face — this is a game of numbers!
If she is under 35, you have a 300%+ of matching with a woman on grammar alone. If she’s 35+, you increase your chances by over a 1/3. Those aren’t insignificant increases in your chances of standing out.
Pro Tip — Run your messages through an online editor too! Good grammar in the message is no less important than it is in your profile.
Making sure you use good grammar on a dating site is like finding gold in the street — all you have to do is pick it up.
