This blog post was adapted from an audio transcript of EP 2426 — Lt Gov Mark Robinson of North Carolina Gives Cheaters a Bad Name of the Teresa Pod.
When we hear politicians loudly tout “family values,” it has almost become a red flag — especially when they later become embroiled in the very behaviors they preach against. Mark Robinson, North Carolina’s lieutenant governor and a candidate for governor, is the latest example of this glaring hypocrisy. His cheating scandal, coupled with some outrageous remarks about slavery, Nazis, and trans people, shows that politicians who project moral superiority are often covering for their skeletons.
This blog breaks down Robinson’s connection to Ashley Madison, his history of controversial statements, and what we can learn from yet another “family values” politician who gives all cheaters a bad name.
And it’s this lack of denial that’s particularly rich coming from a politician who has built his public image on upholding conservative, family-first values. Robinson’s scandal fits perfectly into a broader pattern we’ve seen time and time again: the louder someone preaches about family values, the more likely they are to be hiding something.
Cheating knows no political boundaries. It doesn’t matter if you’re conservative, liberal, or somewhere in between. You can be a MAGA, a libt*^%, a Catholic, or an atheist-cheating is a universal human behavior. And yet, the family values crowd seems to trip up the most spectacularly when they get caught.
As if the Ashley Madison scandal weren’t enough, Robinson has made some other shocking statements that raise even more red flags about his character. These aren’t just harmless slip-ups; they’re bizarro.
Sure, slavery has existed in many forms around the world, and people of all races have participated in it. But in the context of American history, where African Americans were enslaved for centuries, this remark is baffling.
But perhaps the most glaring example of Robinson’s hypocrisy lies in his public stance against trans rights. Robinson has been an outspoken critic of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly trans people, whom he has actively opposed through his policies and rhetoric.
Robinson’s public crash and burn serves as a cautionary tale for anyone living a double life. The harder you fight against something-whether it’s cheating, trans rights, or any other moral issue — the harder it is to separate yourself from it if it turns out you’re dabbling in the same things.
The louder you preach, the worse it’s going to be when the truth comes out. Just think about it — if Robinson had been more measured in his whacky brand of hate, the fallout might not have been so hilarious.
But because he positioned himself as the moral authority, not only do we see him as a scoundrel, he’s meme. Try not to be a meme.
- Cheating is universal, but hypocrisy amplifies the fallout. If you’re caught doing what you denounce, you’re setting yourself up for a much bigger fall.
- Don’t fight against something you secretly enjoy. Whether it’s trans porn or something else, it’s far better to be authentic than to project an image of moral superiority that you can’t live up to.
- Live under the radar if you’re leading a double life. The less you say about the things you oppose, the less you’ll have to answer for when the truth comes out.
Robinson’s downfall is a reminder to all of us — whether we’re politicians, public figures, or just regular people-that self-righteousness will always come back to bite you. If you want to avoid the scandal and embarrassment that Robinson is now enduring, the best approach is to shut your dang ole mouth, dummy!
