If there’s any skill you’ll need as a cheater, it’s lying. You’ll lie often, deliberately, and boldly. You’ll live your lies. You’ll lie to everyone you know. You’ll lie to your lovers, family, friends, and yourself.
And if you start lying to yourself, you’re in trouble. If you catch yourself thinking these things, you’re fooling yourself:
This one will be easy, I won’t need a story.
I won’t be gone long and no one will ask where I went.
No one will see me on that side of town. I’ll be fine.
It’ll be fine.
These lies mean you’re getting too comfortable with cheating and are cutting corners without covering your tracks.
When you start taking risks, no good comes from that. You might be right if “might” is good enough. BUT it only takes that one question you can’t answer to fuck everything up. Remember —
You’ll only ever be as good as your last lie.
If your last lie shits the bed, you’re going to be in trouble. In the selected readings for this lesson, you’ll be introduced adulterous lying. It’s the same as other lying, but with more at stake. As you read through stories, you will get a feel for the themes, situations and common threads you can hang your lies from.
There are so many situations where you’ll need to lie, your lying and lies should be the only thing you think about before and after your dates.
Lesson One introduced you to how cheaters fail and bad lying is one of them. Your lies will save you if you’re good and hang you if you aren’t.
Who Liars Are
You’re lies will turn you into two people as a cheater:
- The first is the loving spouse, parent, and upstanding member of the community.
- The other will be the dirty, lying, cheating snake the world hates.
And when everything falls apart there won’t be a single person cheering for you as your life blows up before your eyes.
Your affair partner included. No matter what they’ve said, they were never looking to start a new life with you, and if they think you’ll take them down too, they’ll walk away.
Never forget — everybody lies.
Lies will be the only thing stopping this from happening.
Living With Your Lies
You will not only need to lie, but you’ll need to live with them. Even as they tear you apart inside, fuck with your mind, and drain your soul of its humanity, you’ll need to keep telling them.
If you aren’t ready to pay the emotional toll that comes with betraying everything you believed about yourself, learn to knit.
Lies will be the only thing standing between you and losing everything.
Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance
Preparation is the best way to get a head start on anything. Lying is no different, so figuring out what you’ll say, before you need it, is the key to success. You might think you’re fast on your feet, and you might be, but few people will be able to pull a full story out of their ass if they aren’t ready for it.
So do yourself a favor and get good at it.
Summary
Getting away with cheating isn’t about luck. Luck is the last thing you want to rely on. A man once told me,
Better lucky than good
Do you know what’s better? Being lucky and good. Being prepared is what makes you good and lets you react on the fly. Filling in a single detail you hadn’t considered is far easier than building a story.
When you’re good, you’ll know that there might be a question you haven’t prepared for, but it won’t catch you off guard. You’ll grow your answer to that question from the details of the story you’ve already prepared, and go from there.
If you’re good, you’ll take unexpected questions in stride, and because of that, you’ll be calm, and because of that, you’ll answer casually.
And that’s why you need to learn to lie.
