Looking over my Amazon sales numbers this week, I noticed that more people are reading my book, How to Cheat: Field Notes from an Adulteress. Then, I turned to The Scarlett Letter’s stat page and noticed a significant increase in reading minutes there as well.
What’s going on?
My thought is, pandemic or not, the run-up to Christmas starting at Thanksgiving takes a lot of work as we focus on getting ready, holiday plans, dinners, presents, and so on. The 36 hours beginning at around noon on Christmas Eve and ending when you go to bed Christmas night can be a flat-out sprint, and then…
The Boxing Day shopping spree fills your day, whether you shop online or in person, and then it hits you — the hangover.
What causes the hangover?
- It’s dark this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere
- Drinking more booze which is a depressant
- Eating too much food full of sugar and empty calories
- Being partied out
- Burning the candle at both ends with late nights and early mornings
- The money crunch and January’s credit card bill
And that’s when people start thinking about what they’ve just done and who they’ve done it with. Or more likely — who they haven’t done it with.
Was she cold and aloof as always? Did he sit on his ass while she ran the show? Did she ignore his morning wood for the 1000th time? Did he fall asleep in his chair after she asked him to come to bed?
The lack of sex
There are many reasons people are thinking about cheating at any time. However, during the post-Christmas period, people might think about it more because the holidays are usually when they feel sexually neglected the most and have more time to think about what they aren’t getting.
Sex is an excellent way to soothe a tired soul. It makes you feel loved and appreciated and allows you to show your lover the same. So is sex the antidote to post-Christmas blues? I don’t know, but how could it hurt?
When you’re not getting any, you feel like shit, and you’re all alone; the idea that there might be someone out there for you doesn’t seem so bad. Or at least that’s what it looks like if the stats have anything to say about it.
The stats

To contrast this, there were 1,591 minutes read on December 1st. As the premiere educational resource on the web for cheaters, and those thinking about it, it seems like there’s an up-tick in people looking for the information we provide.
And I can’t say it surprised me at all.
Takeaway
If you’re sitting there reading this, and you think you might dip your toe in, you aren’t alone. So many people are feeling the same way, and while they won’t all cheat, many will.
And it will feel great!
Having someone in the bedroom that wants to be there because of you, not despite you, can go a long way in chasing those post-Christmas blues away! Why not give it a shot?
